"Cannot complete this action. Please try again"
I had a big problem with my SharePoint 2007 site yesterday. Some aspx pages, folders and files in one of my subsites suddenly disappeared, even though no one deleted anything. When I tried to access those aspx pages (eg, subsite/default.aspx) instead of getting a “Page not found” error, I got a blank page that just printed: “Cannot complete this action. Please try again.”
When I opened up the site using SharePoint Designer, the entire subsite and its folders were missing. However, using the browser I was able to navigate to some folders and files within that subsite (eg, subsite/folder1/file1.pptx). This suggests that the parent folders exist, but for some reason are not being displayed or cannot be accessed. This problem happened for all users, including administrators with full access.
My site is structured as such:
- Parent site
- Child 1 (subsite of Parent)
- Grandchild 1 (subsite of Child 1)
Here’s what was done just prior to the error happening:
1. A user (with admin access to only Child 1 and Grandchild 1) went to one of the Document Libraries in Grandchild 1 subsite.
2. User did Settings à Document Library Settings à Permissions for this Document Library.
3. Then Actions à Inherit permissions (from parent).
4. Child1/default.aspx started showing “Cannot complete this action. Please try again.”
We were only able to resolve this by restoring a previous backup.
Has anyone encountered this before? I need to find out how to prevent this disastrous situation from recurring. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hello all,
I'm resurrecting this post as I wasn't able to get any replies the last time and this same issue just happened again. Hope someone can advise on this. Does SharePoint 2007 have some problems with permissions on multiple site levels? All the actions done
were by users on the front end UI, so it's not caused by some backend manipulation that system administrators were doing.
I'm wondering if I should recreate the Child 1 and Grandchild 1 subsites in another subsite (also under Parent site)?
Thanks in advance for the help.
